Health and Ageing Support

Our health and ageing programming involved implementing the Better Health for Older People in Africa (BHOPA) programme in  Mutoko, Gwanda and Zvishavane with Island Hospice as the main implementing partner. The key milestones/results achieved over the past 2-3 years were:

  • Men and women have access to age friendly services.
  • Demand and supply sides have been strengthened to ensure improved access to health services by OPs.
  • Facilitated training curriculum development and training of 210 health care workers to care for older persons.
  • Dialogue on the National Healthy and Ageing Strategy has been initiated and CCDS is supporting the Ministry of Health and Child Care in the development of the strategy.

A complimentary program to the BHOPA initiative was the SADC –funded project on HIV/AIDS for the population aged 50+. The project combined both health and livelihoods/food security approached to building the resilience of OPs. The major milestones achieved in this project were:

  • Creation of awareness on HIV/AIDS in the areas of HIV and ageism, HIV in old age and promotion of HIV testing among older couples.
  • Gathering knowledge through action research on social protection and access to health for older persons and HIV/AIDS and ageism.

CCDS was also able to support dialogue fora at National Level to discuss health and ageing issues in Zimbabwe.
